Nuclear Powerplant for Moon Outlined

Washington—Concept for a compact 1-megawatt nuclear powerplant for operation on the moon, weighing less than 8 tons, has been outlined by the University of Chicago Argonne National Laboratory for the Atomic Energy Commission. Using mercury as coolant, the plant is powered by a uranium reactor theoretically able to operate continuously for two years.
