New system relies on heating the surface to be protected by blowing a thin sheet of hot air at sonic speeds from a slit on leading edges of primary surfaces.

Washington—New airline transport seat that responds like a shock absorber to ground impacts has been designed to protect passengers from injury or death in survivable accidents. Conceived by Profs. H. R. Lissner and L. M. Patrick of Wayne State University in Detroit, the “tri-axial acceleration seat” uses controlled movement to dampen the peak g forces imposed on a passenger during sudden stops.
