British Investigate Zambian 707 Crash

The accident was notified by Dan-Air Services, Ltd., to the Accidents Investigation Branch (AIB) at 1145 hr. (all times on this report are GMT.) on May 14, 1977. A United Kingdom (UK) accredited representative and a team of advisers participated in the initial stages of the investigations in Lusaka, after which the Zambian authorities elected to delegate the whole of the inquiry to the UK in accordance with paragraph 5.1 of Annex 13 to the ICAO convention.

San Angelo, Tex.—Mitsubishi has given U. S. certification of its new twin-turbofan-powered MU-300 Diamond 1 top priority to speed its entry into the North American business jet market. Mitsubishi Aircraft International, the Japanese company’s wholly owned U. S. subsidiary, has received two Diamond 1 prototypes here for an accelerated flight test program leading to Federal Aviation Administration certification under Part 25, Transport Category, instrument flight rules, approved for operation into known icing.

Pioneer Returns Extensive Saturn Data

Moffett Field, Calif. — Pioneer Saturn spacecraft’s encounter with its namesake has extended man’s planetary reach some 650 million km. (400 million mi.) beyond Jupiter, its previous limit, and set the stage for a further advance, to Uranus, nearly 1.5 billion km. (895 million mi.) closer to the edge of the solar system.
