Renton, Wash.—Determination to keep its 727 and 737 models viable through the 1980s and 1990s underlies recent Boeing Commercial Airplane Co. decisions to add state-of-the-art avionics such as performance computers, digital air data systems and full-range autothrottles to these first-generation aircraft.

Arn-118 Tacan Reliability Triples Goal

Cedar Rapids, Iowa—U. S. Air Force/Collins Avionics-developed AN/ARN-118 microtacan navigation set is demonstrating a field reliability that is more than three times the figure specified in the contract. Unlike most airborne avionics equipment, where in-use reliability is significantly lower than that achieved during factory qualification tests, the ARN-118 is exhibiting an operational reliability that is almost twice the 1,000-hr. figure obtained in earlier qualification tests.

Laminar Flow Research Enters Tunnel, Flight Test

Hampton, Va.—Complex wind tunnel airfoil tests and flight tests with a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 will be part of Phase 2 laminar flow research getting under way Oct. 1 at the Langley Research Center here. Phase 2 work eventually will be funded for a total of at least $29 million over four years, with the wind tunnel and flight tests to begin in 1981.
