The Quiet Famborough

The flying display at Farnborough International 1978 last week was a remarkable demonstration of how far the era of the quiet aircraft has progressed. It was proof positive that technology can and will alleviate the aircraft noise problem without any of the noisy but irrelevant assistance offered by political bureaucrats.

Titanium production capacity in Europe is approaching saturation after slow years earlier in the decade discouraged manufacturers from expansion of facilities. Prices now are expected to spurt as demand from the aerospace industry, the largest customer for the metal, continues to surge with growing order volumes (AW&ST June 19, p. 16).

Angry Admiral Donald M. Kerr, deputy assistant secretary of Energy for defense programs, has been informed by the White House that he incurred the wrath of retired Adm. Thomas D. Davies, assistant director of the Multilateral Affairs Bureau of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency in the State Dept, over comprehensive test ban testimony he gave before Congress (AW&ST Aug. 28, p. 20).

Farnborough-Westland/Agusta antisubmarine helicopter that will be developed and produced jointly by the two European firms for the British and Italian navies will be a relatively large aircraft in the 20,000-26,000-lb. gross weight category powered by three engines in the 1,500-1,800-shp. class.

Traffic Surge Shifts Planning Emphasis

Farnborough-Growth of the Boeing 757 from the 150-passenger U. S. seating version in its first presentation to customers last January to a 175-seat version six months later reflects the phenomenal surge in airline traffic this summer and the search by airlines for lower seat-mile cost transports to handle booming passenger loads.

757 Team Expected to Be Set by Year’s End

Boeing Co. expects to have its team of risk-sharing partners in the 757 program assembled before the year’s end, but the identity, nationality and number of those participants have yet to be determined. While British Aerospace seems to have ruled itself out by planning to rejoin the Airbus Industrie consortium (AW&ST Sept. 4, p. 18), Boeing does not consider the British totally out of contention.

Farnborough-Dassault-Brequet Mirage 2000 interceptor flown by Dassault test pilot Guy Mitaux-Maurouard made an impressive first appearance at the Farnborough air show last week, demonstrating climbing and maneuvering capabilities approaching those of other recent fighter aircraft such as the General Dynamics F-16 and McDonnell Douglas F-15.
