NTSB Reports on Collision at Chicago

A North Central Airlines DC-9-31 and a Delta Air Lines CV-880 collided at the intersection of Runway 27L and the North-South taxiway on the O’Hare International Airport, Chicago, on Dec. 20, 1972, at 1800 CST. The DC-9 was taking off on Runway 27L, and the CV-880 was taxiing across the runway when the collision occurred.

USAF to Begin Hypersonic Testing

Dayton—Air Force is scheduled to begin wind tunnel testing with experimental hypersonic aircraft at Wright-Patterson AFB’s Flight Dynamics Laboratory to speeds up to Mach 5 during Fiscal 1974. Further testing is planned later at speeds to Mach 10 in the wind tunnel at Arnold Engineering Development Center, Tullahoma, Tenn.

Hypersonic Aircraft by 2000 Pushed

Hampton, Va.—Hypersonic research team at Langley Research Center here is pushing for increased effort in research that could lead to a Mach 6 transport by the year 2000. Impetus for the effort has been increased by recent funding cutbacks in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Advanced Supersonic Technology (AST) program, which have pushed back the possible decision date for any supersonic aircraft development to at least the early 1980s.
