F-14 Procurement to Cost $13.9 Million per Unit

Washington—Navy will pay a procurement cost of $13.9 million per copy for Grumman F-14A variable-geometry fighters purchased with Fiscal 1974 funds under a negotiated contract agreement. Deputy Defense Secretary William P. Clements, Jr., has asked the Senate Armed Services tactical air power subcommittee to restore $693.1 million in funds for 50 F-14As deleted earlier in the Senate (AW&ST Sept. 3, p. 11).

Rocket Unit Bearing Improves Steering

Sunnyvale, Calif.—United Technology Center is investigating a wide variety of applications, ranging from the space shuttle to consumer products, for its Techroll seal movable rocket nozzle bearing development. Company officials point to a series of 18 successful firings of motors employing Techroll seal thrust vector control systems as evidence of the soundness of the development, which they claim represents the “first major improvement in rocket steering methods in close to a decade.”
