Navy Joins Air Force Lab Turbine Tests

Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio—Navy has joined the Air Force in the Aero Propulsion Laboratory’s highly successful advanced turbine engine gas generator (ATEGG) program. ATEGG program has developed or contributed to the technology and hardware of almost all U. S. large jet engines now in operation or scheduled to become operational in the next four or five years (AW&ST NOV. 30, 1970, p. 53).

Russian Atc Center at Moscow Blends Old and New in Avionics

Moscow—Soviet Union’s en-route air traffic control center here at Vnukovo airport is serving as a testbed for transitioning newer techniques in traffic control into operation in the Moscow region. The existing center, which controls en-route traffic within a radius of 450 km., has aspects of both an operational and experimental system, as the Soviets gradually introduce some of the electronic technological advances of the past decade.

Denver—Mission planning for the 1978 Pioneer probe/orbit of Venus calls for atmospheric entry by four probes and the bus vehicle from one launch and for orbit by a second spacecraft in a second launch. Science experiment teams have been assembled from the U. S. and Europe for the probes, and selection of experiments for the orbiter is expected by the end of this year.

St. Louis—Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat is possibly able to outperform Lockheed’s YF-12/SR-71 “Blackbirds” only in maneuverability, according to C. L. (Kelly) Johnson, Lockheed senior vice president and head of the company’s “skonk works” at Edwards AFB, Calif., where the Mach 3 aircraft were developed.
