Fatal Dc-4 Flight Held ‘haphazard’

Alaska Airlines Douglas C-54B-DC N 90449, was totally destroyed when it crashed and burned approximately 34 mi. east of Blyn, Wash., about 1719 P.S.T.,1 March 2, 1957. There were two passengers and a crew of three aboard the aircraft, all of whom received fatal injuries as a result of the accident.

White Waltham, England—Fairey’s Rotodyne, now in the early stages of its flight test program here (AW Nov. 18, p. 37), has been designed to beat both helicopter and fixed-wing transports on short-haul routes. Rotodyne is a twin-engined airliner which combines helicopter takeoff and landing performance with the cruise economy of a fixed-wing airplane.

I have read with interest Mr. L. S. Jablecki’s letter (AW Oct. 21, p. 150) inspired by Russell Hawkes’ article (AW Sept. 23, p. 64) about my Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences presentation on fatigue last September. Although Mr. Jablecki is quite outspoken in his disapproval of what he has read and is strongly insistent on his disagreement with my suggestions, I do not feel that we are as far apart as the tone of his remarks would indicate.
