PARIS France’s in-depth review of its longterm defense requirements, which should get underway soon, is expected to detail why a second nuclearpowered aircraft carrier would be needed to supplement the Charles de Gaulle. Although Europe’s emerging joint defense force could significantly alter the French plan, for now, the country intends to retain its full military sovereignty and maintain an autonomous long-distance projection capability.

Turbomeca Buy Gives Snecma a Foothold in Turboshaft Market

PARIS After getting the European green light for its acquisition of Labinal’s aerospace activities, French engine maker Snecma will now be able to target new product sectors, particularly rotarywing applications. In approving the takeover, announced in May, the European Commission noted that there would be minimal overlap in the two companies’ product lines and that their activities in specific sectors were unlikely to lead to dominant market positions—the EC’s primary yardstick for okaying major mergers.

NEW YORK BAE Systems Canada Inc. is pursuing radar- and infrared-based enhanced vision systems as a major growth opportunity, with plans initially to field an IR system within a year. Enhanced vision systems (EVS) could go a long way toward improving both revenues and income at BAE Systems Canada, formerly known as Canadian Marconi. The company recently reported a drop in operating income due to eroding profit margins in several product lines.

Contract Impasse Hits Raytheon Operations

NEW YORK About 3,000 unionized employees of Raytheon Co. remained on strike late last week after rejecting a new contract proposal by the defense company. No new negotiations were scheduled. A strike vote by members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) union Local 1505 came on Sunday, Aug. 27. All of the union members work at Raytheon’s Andover, Mass., facility.

Airborne Flying Lab Creates ‘24-Seat’ Jsf Test Facility

SEATTLE Boeing has completed 70 missions and more than 150 hr. of flight testing on the avionics suite for its Joint Strike Fighter candidate using a 737 transport modified as a flying lab. The effort is part of a coordinated Boeing approach to reduce risk in the JSF program as it heads toward down-select and the engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) stage in mid-2001, according to Rod Leitch, AFL systems manager for software and sensors.
