Government Spurns Korean Business Plan

HONG KONG South Korea's government has rejected a consolidation plan proposed by some of the country's leading aerospace firms as short on cost-cutting measures and long on debt. Government officials said the proposal by the aerospace divisions of Daewoo, Hyundai and Samsung would require the government to cover more than $1 billion in debt.

SWAS Launched On Pegasus XL

LOS ANGELES After waiting more than 3 years for a launch, NASA’s SubmillimeterWave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS) has been successfully boosted into orbit by an Orbital Sciences Corp. Pegasus XL off the California coast. The spacecraft, intended to improve understanding of star formation, was launched Dec. 5, about 9 years after development work began on the 625-lb. satellite.

Pentagon Plans New Look At China Tech Transfer

WASHINGTON The Pentagon and State Dept. are launching a new, thorough study of how China may have benefited militarily from information passed to it by Hughes in the aftermath of a failed 1993 satellite launch. The new study comes on the heels of a Dec. 7 Defense Dept. report to the U.S. Senate that examines Hughes’ exchanges with the Chinese.

USAF To Get More F-16s

Dallas The U.S. Air Force has resumed taking deliveries of F-16s to help meet force requirements of active-duty and Air National Guard squadrons. Sixteen fighters are scheduled to be delivered through the second quarter of 2001, according to an official of Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems (LMTAS) in Fort Worth.

Commercial Mir Looms In Russian ISS Equation

Kennedy Space Center In what would be a milestone in space history, Russian space officials have signed preliminary documents with an unnamed private company for the commercialization of the aged Mir space station. If the deal is consummated, possibly by late December, the Russians plan to keep Mir aloft into 2000-02, raising questions about whether the Yeltsin government can fulfill its commitments to the International Space Station.
