Vought Corp. is working with the Army’s Ballistic Missile Defense Command to apply infrared homing to a ground-based, non-nuclear interceptor missile. The technology involves the company’s miniature homing vehicle for Air Force antisatellite intercepts. The vehicle is scheduled for launch from the McDonnell Douglas F-15 this fall to fly toward a point in space (AW&ST May 2, p. 14).

Buying America Defense Dept. officials, concerned about the effect on North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies of Buy America legislation, watched closely a win-one-and-lose-one game in Congress last week. The Reagan Administration was successful in getting the House Appropriations defense subcommittee to recommend removal of the specialty metals clause prohibiting U. S. purchases of much foreign equipment (AW&ST Apr. 11, p. 28).

Washington—Release of production money for the Martin Marietta Pershing 2 missile has been approved by the House Appropriations defense subcommittee on a 7 to 5 vote, reversing last year’s decision to withhold funding pending successful testing.

TDRS Thrusters Readied For Geostationary Shift

Los Angeles—Two orbital tests of the first Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS-A) reaction control system conducted last week have shown that a pair of small attitude control thrusters will be capable of boosting the nearly 5,000-lb. satellite from its present elliptical trajectory to geosynchronous orbit.
