Germany Modernizing Defense Forces
West Germany’s defense modernization program, including new aircraft acquisition, will peak in 1983, when the defense budget is scheduled to reach $30 billion in current dollars. The modernization, calculated to cost about $77 billion, is expected to provide a new generation of weapons and equipment for the 1980s, and West Germany’s annual defense white paper calls for a major investment in military research and development to keep ahead of recent technological gains by Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact forces.
