Space Power Reactor Being Developed

Washington—Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory is concentrating on a high-temperature, compact, fast neutron nuclear reactor for space power supply in the late 1980s. A reactor in the 10-100-kwe. (kilowatts electric) range to meet space requirements could be used to provide power for high-energy laser or neutral particle beam weapons for space-based ballistic missile defense.

Alverca, Portugal—Portuguese air force maintenance and repair facilities, which until recently were geared primarily to support of a variety of aircraft used in a 14-year colonial war, now are being redirected to meet new aircraft needs and attract foreign customers to make the facilities here a key repair depot for aircraft in the Western Mediterranean and Africa.
