German Industry Studies Mach 3 Vtol

Bonn—West German air force research planners, looking beyond the conventional, licensed-production aircraft its industry is still tooling to build, hope to make the next step to a wideranging family of VTOLs. The VTOL projects include the much-discussed Mach 3 interceptor— the only one as yet beyond the preliminary planning stage—a close-support aircraft designed to attain supersonic speeds at near ground level altitudes and a transport small enough to be secured in forest clearings but large enough to carry a multi-ton payload over tacticalrange distances.

Alpa Forms New Attendants’ Division

Miami Beach, Fla.—Directors of the Air Line Pilots Assn., deadlocked for four days over what to do with flight attendants, have decided to form a separate stewards and stewardesses division linked to ALPA only by a common president. The union division established during the closing hours of ALPA’s 10-day biennial convention here will be headed by Clarence N. Sayen, acting president of the former Air Line Stewards and Stewardesses Assn. since Rowland Quinn walked out of the pilots’ Chicago headquarters last summer.
